We were all individually asked to do a task using AVID in preparation for future projects in which we will be using the system. I was asked to mark in and out a section of the film in order to splice it out and replace the gap provided with other piece of footage. In order to fully learn about AVID you would porbaly need to spend a day or day at it just to familarise yourself with the different functions and icons.

Year 2, Semester 2, Week 5, Lecture

In todays Lecture we went through a handout were we looked at RTE delivery requirements. We looked at the RTE independent productions delivery check list which must be filled out before a programme is broadcast on RTE. We also looked at the other paperwork that must be filled in before the programme is broadcast and it was interesting to see the different sheets on funding and copyright return. In comparison to Channel 4 it is quite a small amount of paperwork. It was also interesting to learn how subtitles and Aertal work and also it was interesting to know how the archives operate.

Year 2, Semester 2, Week 4, Practical

In Todays Practical I began to learn about using Avid. Sarah spent the first hour showing us the differnt functions in using Avid. Sarah showed us showed us first of all how to tranfer your footage into Avid manually by simply clicking on the record icon and clicking it again when you want it to stop, or you can make an in point and an out point and click record and it will rewind and record your selection. Sarah also showed us how the to create bins and name them for your different shot types CU, MS and LS and also to name each shot in order to keep organised. In each bin the frame icon was selected as it gives a thumbnail picture of your shot so that it is easier to access. I then started to use Avid by myself and began by importing the footage Denise and I shot around the college on car clamping. I found Avid easy to use compared to Media 100 and am looking forward to using it in the future.

Year 2, Semester 2, Week 4, Lecture

In todays Lecture we looked at Digital Masters. In the handout given in class we went through what is the difference between Project and Media files, the difference between offline and online editing. I learned about mastering to tape e.g chosen post production house performs colour corrections, titles, effects, etc, then masters to tape. I also learned that sprokit(probaly spelt wrong) holes are on just one side on super16mm and are on both sides on 16mm. Also in todays lecture i learned that RTE programmes must be shot on a professional format such as Digibeta, Beta SX, DVC Pro 50 or DVC Pro 25 and that Mini DV is only acceptable in certain acces or diary-type programming. We also didd a recap on Aspect ratios where we looked at the two different ways to record a 16:9 picture on a 4:3 tape using Letterbox or 16:9 Anamorphoric and how in RTE the programmes must be delivered on 16:9 full height only. In the Lecture I also learned about the different RTE technical specifications.

Year 2, Semester 2, Week 3, Lecture

In this mornings lecture I learned about the different Digital Editing Systems. In the handout we first looked at Media 100 which aimed to take some of Avids market and was considered a cheaper but high-quality platform. Lightworks which was founded in 1989, during the mid-late 90s, fought for a market place against Avid, but in 1998 production was stopped for a period. Then under new ownership, production resumed with 2 main ranges Lightworks Touch and Lightworks Alacrity but both have lost large % of market to Avid. We then looked at the difference between HD and SD, the difference being HD has a collection of digital formats that offer higher resolution images and frame rates, also employs a 16:9 AR which gives a cinematic look. SD includes all analog video formats from consumer hi-8 video to professional BetaSP. We also then looked at Editing Files and remembering to date your first, second and final cuts to allow you to move back to a previous cut that you where happy with. In the conclusion of the lecture we had a recap on Timecode.
